ROVER CURIOSITY | “Horseshoe Crab”-Like Object Spotted on Sol 703

BACKGROUND:
The photograph analyzed here was acquired by the Mast Camera (Mastcam) onboard NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity on Sol 703 (2014-07-29 14:10:30 UTC).

ANALYSIS:
Featured here is a weird anomaly my friend and Executive Producer Brian Dobbs asked me to take a look at. Up close it looks similar to a mangrove horseshoe crab we find here on Earth, i.e. with a dome-shaped shell and tail sticking out the back.

As always, until we get to see these anomalies up close and personal, I can only speculate as to what these objects might be.

ROVER CURIOSITY | Insect-Like Thing Spotted on Sol 1940

BACKGROUND:
The photograph analyzed here was acquired by the Front Hazard Avoidance Camera (Front Hazcam) onboard NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity on Sol 1940 (2018-01-20 14:57:11 UTC).

ANALYSIS:
Here I show a compelling anomaly. It appears to have been photographed near the rover. A closer look reveals an insect-like object. We know there is a high probability that there is liquid water on Mars as seen in photographs showing mud-like trails on slopes. There is also a thin atmosphere on Mars. Could Mars support some type of life-form/s? Or could this be something that blew past the rover?

This anomaly was originally pointed out by Steve Balden.

As always, until we get to see these anomalies up close and personal, I can only speculate as to what these objects might be.

ROVER SPIRIT | Returning to the “Woman Statue” on Mars

BACKGROUND:
The photograph analyzed here (PIA10214) was acquired by the panoramic camera (Pancam) onboard the Rover Spirit on sols 1366 through 1369 (Nov. 6 through Nov. 9, 2007).

ANALYSIS:
Here I present the famous “Woman Statue” on Mars. It appears to be a woman in a dress-like outfit, one leg crossed over the other, with an arm outstretched as if holding something. The head also appears to be looking down. I speculate this object to be about 15 cm to 20 cm tall.

Could this be a statue or is it just a weird process of nature and erosion that sculpted this out of rock?

Bill McGrath emailed me and asked me to take another look at this object, this time using Gigapixel to upscale the image.

All the credit goes out to the researcher that originally discovered this object (regrettably I don’t know who it was).

PERSEVERANCE ROVER | Possible Desert Varnish (Sol 1630 and Sol 531)

BACKGROUND:
The photographs analyzed here were acquired by the SHERLOC WATSON camera, located on the turret at the end of the rover’s robotic arm on Sept. 20, 2025 (Sol 1630) at the local mean solar time of 14:00:09 and the Right Mastcam-Z camera. Mastcam-Z is a pair of cameras located high on the rover’s mast on Aug. 18, 2022 (Sol 531) at the local mean solar time of 10:15:02 respectively.

ANALYSIS:
Recently NASA announced the possibility of ancient microbial life discovered in a Perseverance rover photograph on Mars. On the 20th of September 2025 Perseverance rover photographed possible traces of Desert Varnish. Previously on Sol 531 Perseverance rover photographed another possible trace of Desert Varnish.

As seen in the Wikipedia article referenced, Desert Varnish, almost always shows signs of microbial life.

Could NASA already have evidence of microbial life on Mars, but for some reason, are hesitant in making such an announcement? From all the evidence I’ve seen I speculate they have.

As always, until we get to see these anomalies up close and personal, I can only speculate as to what these objects might be.

PERSEVERANCE ROVER | Possible Bone Fragment (Sol 1628)

BACKGROUND:
The photograph analyzed here was acquired by the Left Navigation Camera (Navcam) onboard the Mars Perseverance rover. The camera is located high on the rover’s mast and aids in driving. This image was acquired on Sept. 18, 2025 (Sol 1628) at the local mean solar time of 11:03:02.

ANALYSIS:
It’s been a while since the Perseverance rover photographed any anomalies or out-of-place objects, but that all changed on 18 September 2025 when the rover photographed what I speculate could be a fossilized bone fragment. It is similar in appearance to a Moa bone fragment I reference in the video.

As always, until we get to see these anomalies up close and personal, I can only speculate as to what these objects might be.

ROVER CURIOSITY | A Closer Look at Joe White’s 2023 Airborne Object Discovery

BACKGROUND:
The photograph analyzed here was taken by the Right Navigation Camera onboard NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity on Sol 2948 (2020-11-21 07:58:19 UTC).

ANALYSIS:
Featured here is a strange airborne object photographed by the Rover Curiosity. It appears in a sequence of photographs taken by the Right Navigation Camera about twelve to thirteen seconds apart. It is only visible in one of these photographs (the second one in this sequence). The object has a symmetrical appearance with a semi-transparent part protruding off the bottom. There is also a curious streak and object above it.

Could this be an insect-like thing that flew past the rover or a larger craft-like object in the far distance?

As always, until we get to see these anomalies up close and personal, I can only speculate as to what these objects might be.

The image below shows a comparison between conventional magnification and Gigapixel image upscaling. The conventional magnification was produced by a Magnifier Extension added to Chrome. The comparison between the two types of image upscales shows that the shape, outlines, highlights, shadows and geometry are the same in both, except conventional magnification produces blurred images whereas Gigapixel preserves edges producing clearer images. The smaller inset image is the anomaly at actual size 1:1 scale.
