I often wondered why NASA publishes grey-scale photographs with the grid overlay, until I found out about the Bayer-Filter that they apply to colour/color photographs to convert them to grey-scale.
Here I present a step-by-step guide on how to decode or convert Bayer-Filter grey-scale/B&W encoded Mars rover photographs to colour/color using DaVinci Resolve and custom DCTL scripts.
I also show you the Analyst’s Notebook where you can find colour/color photographs that have already been decoded. Analyst’s Notebook links to the NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) and is a tool used by the scientific community, so it is an official tool with direct links to NASA.
